Museum of National
History (Tirana):
This is the most important Albanian museum and includes 3,600 items of Albanian
cultural heritage that begins with the Paleolithic and continues until items
from our own day. Of greatest interest are items from prehistory, antiquity, the
middle ages and the period of Albanian national independence.
Museum of Archeology (Durres):
This museum is rich in items from the ancient period before Illyria, and from
the Roman and Byzantine eras. One can find currencies from various periods,
swords and armaments, ceramic amphora and sculptures.
Gjergj Kastrioti
Skenderbeg Museum (Kruje):
Sections of this museum include many original objects, various authentic and
reproduced documents, and wall murals that give one a full picture of the
Albanian resistance to early Ottoman expansion in the 15th Century.
Ethnographic Museum (Kruje):
This building represents unique architecture. Ninety percent of the items on
display are original, some of which are nearly 500 years old. Most remarkably is
that the majority of all items are still functional today.
National Museum of
Onofri (Berat):
The Onufri Museum of Berat is in the Saint Mary's cathedral in the center of the
old castle walls of Berat. The museum has rare icons and other religious
articles by Onufri, one of the most prolific artists of the 16th Century. When
Onufri's Saint Mary icon was exhibited in Paris, many viewers named it the
Albanian Mona Lisa.
Ethnographic Museum (Berat):
One of the unique momuments in this museum is the reconstruction of a street
typical of the middle ages, including a traditional bazaar. The museum includes
a traditional guest room typical of rural homes and a kitchen typical of homes
in the city of Berat.
Gjergj Kastriotit
Memorial (Lezhe):
This memorial is located in the ruins of the cathedral of Saint Nicholas, the
location of the Oath of Lezhe took place on 2 March 1444. Also in the cathedral
ruins is the grave of the Albanian national hero, Gjergj Kastriot, known also as
Skenderbeg.
Museum of Art from the
Middle Ages (Korce):
As one understands from the name of this museum, it houses the most valuable
legacies created by Albanian artists for five centuries. Included are golden
icons and prestigious works of art from the time following the Byzantine, from
the 12th through 14th Centuries.
National Museum of
Education (Korce):
The National Museum of Education is housed in the first school in Albania, which
opened on 7 March 1887. The museum expositions include important examples of
Albanian language and literature.
National Museum of
Independence (Vlore)::
This museum is housed where the first national government of Albania was located
in 1912. The most important rooms in the museum are the office of Prime Minister
Ismail Qemali and the meeting hall of the first Albanian assembly. |
